The channel does not replace the verification step

A USSD menu, provider app or browser checkout is only the channel used to present an instruction. Before approving, check the recipient or merchant, amount, reference and purpose. Cancel if any field is unfamiliar. A caller who tells you to “approve to reverse” or “confirm to receive a refund” should be treated with caution; use the provider’s official support channel instead.

A legitimate payment prompt should be tied to an action you initiated. If the device receives a prompt while you are not making a transaction, do not approve it. Do not share a PIN or OTP with someone who claims they need it to cancel or trace a transaction.

Keep a clear record of the flow

Note where the payment began (official merchant app, website or provider menu), the date and time, and the provider transaction reference. Avoid storing a PIN or screenshot of a screen that exposes credentials. If you contact support later, these details help distinguish a provider issue from a merchant-page timeout.

A browser can time out after a provider completes the payment. Check your wallet or bank history and then the merchant account before retrying. A missing confirmation page does not automatically mean the payment failed.

Safer habits on a shared phone

  • Do not leave a payment menu open when handing your phone to someone else.
  • Use device lock, keep the operating system updated and install apps from official stores.
  • Review any prompt in private, with the amount and recipient visible.
  • End a session when finished and do not save payment passwords on a shared device.
