M-PESA Payment Checklist

Before you approve a prompt

Open the merchant platform through the address or app you already trust, then check its current cashier. Confirm that M-PESA is explicitly offered for your account. If the payment method is not present, stop: a third party’s instructions to send money to a personal number, till or paybill are not a substitute for the platform’s official integration.

When a prompt appears on your own phone, read the recipient or merchant description, amount, currency and any reference shown. Compare it with the intended transaction. A prompt arriving at an unexpected time or for a different amount is a reason to cancel and verify independently.

Confirm only when the details match

• Use the provider interface you initiated; do not approve a prompt requested by an unsolicited caller.
• Check the amount and recipient on screen, not only a screenshot or copied message.
• Keep your PIN private. Safaricom’s public material says the PIN is for you alone.
• Wait for the provider’s confirmation and separately check the merchant account status.
• Save the full receipt and reference number without posting it publicly.

After the transaction

Record the time, amount, transaction reference and the merchant account or username involved. If the provider shows success but the platform balance does not reflect the payment, contact the platform through its official help route and provide only the information it requests through a secure channel. If the provider shows pending or failed, ask the provider about that exact reference.

Do not repeat the payment immediately just because the page appears slow. First check both transaction histories; repeating an instruction can create a duplicate. If you suspect an erroneous transfer, act promptly through the provider’s official process and follow its instructions. A reversal is not automatic and is subject to the provider’s terms and review.
