Provider authorisation is not merchant acceptance

Mobile money is an electronic payment service. In a typical online payment flow, the merchant presents a payment option, the provider processes an instruction, and each side records a status. The Central Bank directory is useful for checking who is authorised to provide payment services; it does not list every merchant’s payment integrations.

The cashier or payment page is the authoritative place to check whether a given account can use M-PESA, Airtel Money, card or bank transfer. Menus can vary by platform, account verification status, currency, maintenance, device and jurisdiction. If a method is not shown, do not try a different recipient or an unofficial “agent” to force the payment through.

Read the confirmation before approving

A mobile-money prompt can identify an amount, merchant or reference. Compare these fields with the action you intended. A familiar logo or a message from someone claiming to be support is not enough; verify the transaction details on your own handset and within the official service.

After confirmation, keep the original receipt message or in-app record. Note the transaction reference and time. The receipt can help the provider or platform trace a payment, but it is not by itself proof that the merchant has credited an account. Check the merchant’s own transaction history separately.
