Compare the two records
Check the provider’s transaction history for both items. Compare reference numbers, timestamps, amounts, recipient descriptions and statuses. A duplicated browser screen or an authorisation hold may look like a second transaction without representing a second final debit. The provider or card issuer can explain what each record means.
Check whether the merchant account shows one credit, two credits or none. Keep the original messages and avoid deleting notifications while the issue is unresolved. Do not post your full transaction message in a public forum.
Contact support with a concise timeline
Send the two references, amount, date and time through the provider’s official support channel. If both are confirmed completed, contact the merchant with both references and ask it to trace each separately. State what you see without assuming which party caused the duplicate.
Do not initiate a third payment while the first two records are under review. Avoid agreeing to a “refund” sent to a different wallet or recipient unless the provider confirms the process through its own official channel.
A reversal is not guaranteed
Providers have their own terms and review procedures for erroneous transactions. A request is not a promise that funds will be returned, and a merchant may need to verify whether it received or used a payment. Follow official instructions and retain case numbers and responses.
Safaricom’s customer-facing materials advise users to verify reversal requests. Never share a PIN or OTP to approve a purported reversal. If support asks for credentials, stop and confirm through the published official contact route.
